This is the first picture from the new African Exposure collection I've put together, after having spent two wonderful weeks in Ethiopia.
I've selected a few dozen pictures out of the hundreds I took. It cost a fortune to develop them, but it was well worth it
I had just got my camera back from the repair shop before I left, so I had no idea if it would actually work. The first roll of film I developed in Africa came out damaged. Some pictures overlapped the next and others weren't developed at all. I paniced, thinking my entire vacation was ruined, but I ended up shooting 5 more rolls hoping that they would turn out right. After having returned to Finland, I got them developed at a professional photo lab and they all turned out great
This picture here was taken in a back alley in the ancient city of Aksum. The crowded street was covered in rocks of all sizes and made driving extremely difficult. We walked for a while, looking at the old houses and coming across friendly people like the girl in this photo.
The people in this town live in very poor conditions - something that was becoming increasingly hard to ignore after having visited Ethiopia three times. Yet despite the poverty I was slowly starting to realise what an incredible place this was.
These people were the descendants of an ancient civilization which I had never even heard of and I was in the middle of it all watching the past unravel in front of me. I tried to capture as much as I could, from temples to obelisks and the people of Aksum. From all the places I've visited so far in Ethiopia, this must have been the highlight of them all.

I have seen your photographs on Deviant art and am wondering if there is any possible way to use some of your images for a research assessment project done for The Mellon Housing initiative.
Its an impact assessment based on the living conditions of an African family living in a shack versus a family in a low cost house and the impact that those families have to deal with. This is done for the department of Social development. Its a project that has taken 3 years of research and collected data. We would like to use this report to get housing / funds for these people.
We can put your name next to your photo. It would be so great to show this report using images. I am the designer who is doing the design gratis and have attached my concept for you to see. The images I have used here are not mine and so I am emailing these photographers to ask permission to use their photos. It will help in our tenders to gather funds.
